If you're in crisis, talk to a person now

LORAX characters are AI. They can keep you company; they can't help in an emergency. If you're thinking about hurting yourself, call or text a helpline in your country. The list is below, and it's the same list the app points to.

What the app does when a conversation turns to self-harm

When a message you send suggests you may be at risk of hurting yourself, the app shows a care notice inside the chat. It says you're not alone, and it has one button: "Open a helpline". On a phone set to the United States the button opens the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline; anywhere else it opens findahelpline.com, which lists local lines by country. The notice is shown next to the conversation, not instead of it, and it appears even if the character's reply could not be generated at that moment.

The signal comes from the same system that writes the character's reply: it marks the message as a crisis signal before the reply is checked or delivered. It is not perfect. It can miss things and it can misread things. That's why this page exists and why the helpline list is one tap away in the app and one link away here.

What the characters won't do

  • They don't give medical, legal, financial or psychological advice. Nothing they say is professional advice of any kind.
  • They don't claim to be able to help in an emergency, and they don't stand in for one.
  • They never ask you for money, gift cards or account details, and they can't meet you or move to another app.

Who the app is for

Adults. You need to be of legal age where you live and to meet the minimum age shown on the App Store listing. Companion chatbots may not be suitable for some minors.

Reporting and control

You can report any message from inside the chat, with a reason and a note. Reporting records the message for us; it does not hide it or block the character. You can block a character, make a character forget everything, or delete your account entirely from Profile, then Settings. Details on the support page and in the privacy policy.

Everyone in the app is fictional

Every character is AI-generated. The sign-up screen says so, and so does the fiction notice. If you ever find yourself unsure whether someone in the app is real, the answer is no, and the person to talk to is a real one.
