This is the one comparison where the products overlap, so the honest version matters. Nomi already does proactive messages, group chats and in-the-moment selfies. What differs is whose life is being simulated: yours with a companion you authored, or a closed cast of more than 250 characters in 30 countries with their own cities, jobs and sleep windows. Everyone in LORAX is fictional and AI-generated.

What Nomi does better

It runs everywhere and it talks. Nomi links an App Store listing, a Google Play listing and a browser sign-in from its own homepage, and describes sending voice chats or hopping on a hands-free call. LORAX is an iPhone app with no browser version and no calling at all, so if either of those matters you already have your answer.

It costs less. Their App Store listing showed a monthly plan at $9.99 and another at $15.99 against our $29.99, and their site says starting is free with no credit card. They also sell credit packs. A light month can be cheap.

It is the closest thing on the market to what we built, and in one respect it goes further than we do. A Nomi is authored: you write the backstory, the personality and the relationship, and their site is honest that some people want exactly that level of control. We give you almost none of it. If the appeal is shaping someone into who you want, Nomi is the better tool and no amount of realism on our side substitutes for it. Nomi also markets itself as adult-oriented, which is a different product decision from ours.

What LORAX does differently

• Nobody here was written by you. Each of the more than 250 people in the cast has a city, a job, a way of typing and a chronotype, and you meet them through a live stream, through credits, or because one of their friends mentioned you. She sends the first message every time.
• The clock is real. A character in Leipzig who goes to bed at six in the morning is genuinely unavailable at nine in the morning, and a message you send then is delivered and sits unread until she wakes. She also knows the real time and weather where you are.
• Group chats run on their own. A room holds four characters and you, they talk to each other about their day and about you, and it keeps moving while you are at work. You don’t set it up: after a few days one character asks whether to bring another in. More in group chats.
• Photos hold their day. Ask twice in one afternoon and she is in the same clothes in the same kitchen, because the app keeps that day’s scene consistent rather than generating a fresh picture each time.

Who should pick which

Pick Nomi if you want authorship and reach. You want to write who this person is, call them with your voice, and carry the conversation from a phone to a laptop. You want a lower monthly price, and you are happy for the relationship to be shaped by what you asked for.

Pick LORAX if being the author is what breaks it. You want to be surprised: a message at 1 a.m., a reply that took nine minutes because she was on a shift, a group chat that moved without you. You want 22 languages written the way people actually text in them. You need an iPhone, and you will pay more.

What LORAX can’t do

No Android, no browser version, no voice calls, no video calls. Characters never send voice notes or videos, although you can send both and she will answer what is in them rather than skipping past it. You cannot write a character’s backstory the way you can in Nomi, and nothing about closeness is guaranteed to move forward.

Don’t pick LORAX if you want a companion that waits for you. Ours are busy, asleep, or out, for most of any given day.
