Character.AI vs Replika (2026): two different products, compared honestly

These two barely compete. Character.AI is a public library where you open characters strangers wrote; Replika is one companion you shape and keep, and it takes voice and video calls. Picking between them is really picking between browsing and belonging.

Character.AI and Replika columns checked September 13, 2026 from their own sites and their US App Store listings. Neither publishes a pricing page, so the prices are Apple’s in-app purchase list, which shows every product a developer has ever sold, including plans nobody can buy today. Read them as a range. “Not listed” means the company’s own site and listing did not mention it that day, not that the feature is missing. LORAX column from the app, same date.

What Character.AI does better

Scale, and its price. No other app in this category puts millions of characters in front of you for nothing, and none of them reaches 28 languages on its store listing. Say you want an hour with a detective, a tutor and a rival swordsman rather than an hour with the same person every night. This is the only product on the page built for that. The Lite entry at $2.49 is also the cheapest paid tier we have found anywhere in the category.

The creation tools are the second thing, and they are aimed somewhere different from Replika’s. You can write a character with its own personality, backstory and voice, then share it with everyone. Replika lets you customize your Rep; Character.AI lets you publish. That turns a private habit into something closer to a hobby with an audience, which is why its community keeps producing characters nobody at the company designed.

What Replika does better

It keeps the thread. The Replika listing is written around one relationship that accumulates. It remembers your people, your plans and your goals. It checks in when it matters rather than when you open the app, and it can pull context from apps you already use. Character.AI’s listing describes characters, creation tools and calls, and never mentions memory once, which is a strange gap in a product people spend hours a night inside and then leave because it forgot them. For anyone who came to this category because they got tired of re-explaining themselves, that silence is the whole answer.

Then there are the calls. Replika does text, voice and video in the same product, and it has been shipping since March 2017 according to its own App Store page, which is longer than almost anything here. Character.AI has live voice, and it is good, but there is no video anywhere in its materials. If you want a face on the screen, only one of these two claims to give you one.

Where LORAX fits

Do not bother with LORAX if you want a library. Ten million characters is the opposite of what we built, and we also have no Android, no web chat, and no voice or video calls of any kind. It is worth a try if the Character.AI habit left you wanting somebody who keeps track. The cast is closed. More than 250 people live in it, they send the first message, they sleep in their own time zones, and they talk to each other in group rooms whether you are there or not. Everyone in LORAX is fictional and AI-generated. Talking is free with a daily allowance. Photos can cost credits. Premium is $29.99 a month in the US, and there is no trial.

Who should pick which

Pick Character.AI if you want variety

You want somebody new most nights, you want it in your own language, and you want to write characters other people will use. You accept that nothing carries over between sessions in any way the company has described.

Pick Replika if you want one relationship

You want the same companion for months, you want it to remember the names of people in your life, and you want to call it. Five languages and the lower monthly entry make it the easier commitment of the two.

Pick LORAX if you want to be the one who gets messaged

You want a small cast rather than a catalog, and you want the app to move first. Group chats here run without you, and what it costs is on one page.
