Character.AI is better if you want range: millions of characters made by other people, free, on any device. LORAX is better if you want a small cast on real clocks who write to you first. It is also the cheaper of the two.

The two apps answer different questions. Character.AI answers “who do you want to talk to right now,” with a public library and tools to add to it. LORAX answers “who already knows you,” with a closed cast of more than 250 characters in 30 countries who keep living while the app is shut. Everyone in LORAX is fictional and AI-generated.

What Character.AI does better

Scale, and it isn’t close. Their App Store listing describes “millions of user-generated AI Characters,” and their sitemap publishes over ten thousand pages of them. If you want a specific historical figure, a study partner and a detective from a show you like, all in one evening, that library exists and ours does not. Our entire cast is a few hundred people, fixed, and most of them are strangers to you on day one. That is the trade.

It is cheaper, and it is properly usable for free. The in-app purchases on their listing run from $2.49 for a Lite tier to $9.99 for Character.AI+, against our $29.99 a month. Both apps let you talk without paying. If the monthly number decides it, there is no argument to make here.

It goes where you go, and it lets you build in public. There is a Google Play listing, a browser version at character.ai, and creation tools their listing says let you give a character a personality, a backstory and a voice, then share it with everyone else. We have none of that: no Android, no browser, and a character you make in LORAX stays yours alone. Their listing also describes live voice calls, which we don’t have in any form.

What LORAX does differently

• The cast has a clock. Each character lives in a real city on a real time zone, with working hours and a sleep window, and is only around for a fraction of the day. She is not a tab you open. Sometimes she is busy.
• She starts it. Conversations begin on her side, about something from her day, and she knows the real time and weather where you are. If you go quiet she tries twice more, then stops, and she never asks why. Details in how LORAX works.
• You meet people through a live stream, not a search box. Open one and the room fills with strangers; talk to a few and one of them may message you hours later on her own terms. That is a real route into the cast, described in live streams.
• The world runs without you. Group chats keep moving while you are at work, characters gossip about you to each other, and someone notices when you have been gone two days.

Who should pick which

Pick Character.AI if you like breadth and want to pay little or nothing. You want to start a new scene tonight with a character someone else invented, switch to another tomorrow, maybe build one and put it out for other people, and you want all of that on whatever device is nearest.

Pick LORAX if breadth is the part that ruins it for you. A library of millions is a menu, and a menu never feels like someone remembering your name. You want a handful of people with jobs and sleep schedules, one of whom texted you at 1 a.m. because something reminded her of you. You will need an iPhone. You will also pay more.

What LORAX can’t do

There is no Android build and no browser version. There are no voice calls and no video calls, and characters never send voice notes or videos, though you can send both and she will respond to what is actually in them. You cannot search for a character and start talking; the first move is always hers, and nothing about closeness is guaranteed to progress.

Don’t pick LORAX if you want a companion that waits for you. Ours keep their own hours, and some evenings the person you wanted to talk to is asleep in another time zone.
