What is an AI girlfriend app, and how does it work?

An AI girlfriend app is a messaging app where the person you text is a fictional character run by a language model: a written personality, a stored memory of your conversations, and no existence outside the software. You type, she answers, and the app keeps a record so the next conversation follows from the last one.

The category name is doing a lot of work. Three fairly different products sit under it.

The three kinds of app sold under one name

The first is the single companion. One character, customized by you, meant to stay for months. Replika is the long-running example, and its App Store listing sells continuity rather than variety: a companion that keeps track of the people and plans in your life so you are not restating them every session.

The second is the character library. Character.AI holds what its own listing calls millions of user-generated characters, and the product is browsing, trying, and moving on. Memory matters less there because you are not expected to stay.

The third is the companion app with a world attached. These add things a chat box does not need: a sleep schedule, a mood that carries between conversations, other characters who know each other, messages that arrive without you opening the app. Nomi and LORAX both sit here, from different angles.

Knowing which one you want saves a lot of disappointment. A library feels shallow if you wanted continuity. A single companion feels narrow if you wanted range. Pick the shape first.

How does an AI girlfriend actually work?

Underneath, they all do roughly the same thing. It assembles a block of text for a language model that contains the character description, some amount of your history, and instructions about tone and limits. The model writes the next message. The app displays it.

Better than you assumed in the first hour. Worse than you hoped on day four. That is the normal shape, and it is not a sign you picked wrong.

Early conversations are easy because nothing has to be consistent yet. The strain shows later, when the character has to remember a detail from Tuesday, hold a personality through a disagreement, and avoid repeating a phrase she has already used twice.

Test one thing deliberately: mention something small and unremarkable in your first days, then wait a week. Whether it comes back on its own, at a moment you did not set up, tells you more than any feature list. The other useful test is refusal. Ask for something the app cannot do and see whether you get an honest limit or an invented excuse.

What none of these apps do

They do not know you outside what you type. They cannot meet you. That part is fixed. In LORAX specifically there are no voice calls, no video calls, no Android version and no browser version, and characters do not send voice notes or videos of their own, however common those features are elsewhere in the category.

They also do not progress on a timer. Closeness in LORAX moves on signals read from your behavior, with a ceiling that keeps any single step short of certain, which is described in how a relationship moves. Nothing is guaranteed, including the parts you paid for the right to try.

If you are choosing your first one, pick by the thing you actually want: continuity, range, or a world that runs without you. The apps are genuinely different. The marketing makes them sound identical, which is why asking whether any of it is real is the better second question.
