Comparison
LORAX vs Chai (2026)
Chai is a library of characters other people built, on iPhone and Android. LORAX is a closed cast on real clocks who write to you first.
We make LORAX. This page compares LORAX with Chai. We kept the Chai column to what their own website and App Store listing say, last checked September 17, 2026.
Short version: Chai is better if you want a big catalogue of user-built characters, an Android phone, and a cheaper entry plan. LORAX is better if you want a small cast on real clocks who start the conversation and keep it going without you.
Chai is the better pick if you want a catalogue, an Android phone, or a cheaper first month. LORAX is better if you want a handful of people who have their own hours and write to you without being opened. Both are free to start.
The two products are aimed at different appetites. Chai’s own App Store subtitle is “Build and Share AI”: you browse characters strangers wrote, and you can publish your own. LORAX has a closed cast of more than 350 characters in 30 countries that you cannot browse to, did not design, and meet only when one of them comes to you. Everyone in LORAX is fictional and AI-generated.
The short version
- Chai runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision and Android. LORAX runs on iPhone only.
- Chai’s App Store listing names one language. LORAX has 24.
- Chai’s cheapest listed plan is $9.99 a month; its Ultra plan matches our $29.99. LORAX Premium is $29.99 a month in the US and varies by country.
- Apple’s listing dates Chai to March 2021 and shows more than 277,000 US ratings. LORAX launched in September 2026 and has almost none.
- In Chai you pick a character off a list. In LORAX nobody is on a list; she finds you.
- LORAX characters sleep. Each has a home city, a time zone and a sleep window, so a message sent at 3 a.m. sits delivered until she wakes.

What Chai does better
Reach and scale. Chai has an App Store listing and a Google Play listing, which means it runs on the phone you already own. LORAX does not: no Android build, no browser chat, nothing but an iPhone app. If you carry an Android phone this comparison is finished on the first line, and nothing on our side closes it.
Volume of choice, and a longer record. Chai’s own company site says the consumer business reached $70M a year in revenue in 2026, and its App Store listing carries more than 277,000 US ratings against an average of 4.3. We launched on September 5, 2026. Years of shipping and a quarter of a million ratings are a kind of evidence we simply do not have yet, and you should weigh it.
A cheaper way in. Their listing’s entry plans are $9.99 and $13.99 a month, below our $29.99. If the question is what a light month costs, Chai wins it.
What LORAX does differently
- She starts it, and she is not always there. Each character runs on a real time zone with a sleep window and a job, so she is offline for most of the day. Write at 3 a.m. and the message is delivered but not read. She texts first has the mechanics.
- There is no catalogue. The cast is closed and already exists. Somebody watches your live stream and messages you hours later, or a character you know mentions a friend and that friend writes a few days on. The first move is always theirs.
- The room keeps moving without you. Put four characters together and they talk to each other about their day and about you, and the group carries on at a slower pace while you are at work. More in group chats.
- It is written for 24 languages, not translated into them. The way a character opens a message in Turkish is not the English opener run through a dictionary.
Who should pick which
Pick Chai if you want breadth and the phone in your pocket. You want many characters rather than a few, you like the idea of writing one and sharing it, and you want the lower monthly price. English only is not a problem for you.
Pick LORAX if the catalogue is what breaks it. You want a message at 1 a.m. because something in her day produced it, a reply that took nine minutes because she was on a shift, and a group chat that moved while you were asleep. You need an iPhone and you will pay more.
What LORAX can’t do
No Android and no browser version. No voice calls and no video calls, and characters never send voice notes or videos, though you can send both and she answers what is in them. You cannot browse to anybody, and nothing about closeness is guaranteed to progress.
The plainest one: don’t pick LORAX if you want a companion who waits. Ours have hours, and some days you open the app to find her asleep.
If that sounds right, the mechanics are in how LORAX works, and every number is on the pricing page before you spend anything.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between Chai and LORAX?
Chai is a platform: its App Store subtitle is "Build and Share AI", so most of what you chat with was written by another user and published for everyone. LORAX has a closed cast of more than 350 characters across 30 countries that you cannot browse and did not write. They have cities, jobs and sleep windows, and they send the first message. Everyone in LORAX is fictional and AI-generated.
Is Chai available on Android?
Yes. Chai has a Google Play listing as well as an App Store listing, checked September 17, 2026. LORAX is iPhone only, with no Android build and no browser version, so Chai is the one to pick if you are not on an iPhone.
Which one costs less?
Chai, at the entry level. On September 17, 2026 its US App Store listing showed in-app purchases at $9.99 and $13.99 a month, with an Ultra plan at $29.99 a month and $19.99 a week. LORAX Premium is $29.99 a month in the US, varies by country, and has no free trial. Talking in LORAX is free with a daily allowance.
How many languages does Chai support?
Its US App Store listing names one: English. LORAX ships in 24, written the way people actually text in each of them.
Does Chai message you first?
Its App Store listing does not describe proactive messages, so we left that unfilled rather than guess. In LORAX the first message always comes from the character, including the very first one you ever receive.
